Description
Fire EEL 25-30CM
The Fire Eel inhabits slow-moving waters, such as flooded floodplains and tranquil river sections. This nocturnal species tends to remain partially buried in the substrate during daylight hours, surfacing at night to consume benthic insect larvae, small fish, worms, and some plant matter. It thrives in peaceful aquariums devoid of small fish, requiring a spacious environment with a soft sand substrate to accommodate its digging behavior. Ample hiding spots should be provided through plant thickets, bogwood, smooth rocky caves, and PVC pipes. Due to their size, larger Fire Eels can disrupt aquarium decor, so it is advisable to secure decorations firmly by placing them at the bottom before adding substrate. Indian Almond Leaves serve as beneficial leaf litter but need regular replacement as they decompose. Lighting should be softened with floating plants, and a blue moonlight can enhance visibility of these nocturnal creatures just before the main lights are turned off. While they often remain hidden during the day, Fire Eels become quite active at night. Although generally not aggressive, adult Fire Eels may prey on small fish, necessitating careful selection of tankmates, such as larger gouramis, peaceful botiid loaches, knifefish, Geophagus spp., and Severums. They can be territorial with one another, so it is best to keep them singly, although groups of five or more can coexist in a spacious tank with plenty of visual barriers to mitigate aggression.
