Description

In the wild, this moray eel can be found further inland, away from tidal influences and seawater influx, more so than any of its relatives. When located in freshwater, these habitats tend to be hard and alkaline, and this eel can thrive under such conditions for years, with adults believed to migrate to the sea for spawning. This sizable bottom-dweller needs a spacious aquarium with a soft sand substrate where it can search for food and relax. It should have plenty of hiding spots among rocky caves, PVC tubes, and resilient plants like Java fern or Anubias. Filtration must be effective, providing areas of moderate water movement along with some quieter resting spots away from the current. Regular partial water changes are crucial to keep nitrate levels low. A high KH is vital for maintaining the health of this fish, and it can also thrive in brackish or marine environments. Long-term health may improve with the addition of saltwater, particularly for females that seem gravid. Moray eels are very predatory, but they can be kept in groups in spacious tanks and generally get along with other calm species that are too large to be eaten. Although their vision is quite poor, moray eels possess a sharp sense of smell and can detect movement vibrations effectively, quickly lunging at any potential prey. This includes hands, so caution is necessary when performing maintenance on the aquarium – they can deliver a painful bite! To avoid creating a link between fingers and food, it’s advisable to refrain from hand-feeding morays of any type. Make sure the tank has tightly fitting covers, as these fish are skilled escape artists.
