Yellow Fin Spiny Eel 7-10CM
The eel Mastacembelus frenatus is native to Central Africa, specifically found in regions such as Kasa, Haut-Congo, and the Luapula-Moero system. In East Africa, it inhabits the Victoria basin, including the Nabugabo system, the Victoria Nile, and the Aswa River, as well as Lake Tanganyika and its major tributaries like the Rusizi, Malagarazi, and Akagera, along with Lake Kyoga and its smaller connected lakes and rivers. In southern South Africa, this species is present in the Upper Zambezi, Okavango, and Kafue systems, with a distribution across the Upper Zambezi system and its northern tributaries, including the Kabompo and West Lunga. The Great Lakes eel is distinguished by its short forehead and fleshy snout, supported by two separate pins. Its coloration is highly variable, typically featuring a brown background with a dotted pattern. For optimal tank conditions, these eels thrive in aquariums that include plants, rocks, logs, and burrows for hiding. Incorporating surface plants and providing subdued lighting can encourage them to explore and feed more actively within the aquarium.
