Yellow Emperor Snakehead Channa Maruliodes 15-16cm
Emperor Snakehead (Channa maruliodes) is originally found in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia. The adult has a distinctive yellow body adorned with black spotted scales. Maruliodes showcases its own unique design of bands and flowers, much like a fingerprint. The name ‘Snakehead’ comes primarily from their head’s resemblance to that of a snake, but it may also relate to their sharp teeth. They are among the few social species within the Channidae family, swimming in schools as juveniles and hunting together as they mature. Snakeheads possess an additional respiratory organ, enabling them to breathe air for extended periods. It’s essential to have a strong, tightly fitting lid on their aquarium since they can jump or escape while hunting live fish. Aquariums tailored to specific species are advisable due to their highly predatory and aggressive nature; however, they can coexist with some of the largest cichlids (Gars are typically a safe choice), large catfish, and various sizable Plecos. Careful selection of tank mates is crucial, ensuring they are comparable in size as adults.
