Description

Red Terror Cichlid

The Red Terror is found from the Rio Esmeraldas drainage in Ecuador to the Rio Tumbes basin in Peru, located on the Pacific side of South America. In this region, it inhabits various biotopes, particularly small to medium-sized rivers, where it prefers the slower, densely vegetated areas near the banks. This species is extremely territorial and can grow to a significant size (both in length and girth), necessitating a spacious aquarium equipped with powerful filtration. A substrate of soft sand or small rounded gravel is recommended. Large pieces of driftwood and rocks or slate can be utilized to create sheltered spaces, but these should be secured, as these substantial cichlids are known for their digging behavior and are quite capable of rearranging the decor. It is advisable to bond rocks together using aquarium-grade silicone sealant before filling the tank. Given that large amounts of substrate are likely to be disturbed daily, it is not feasible to cultivate plants. A guard should be installed on the heater to prevent breakage, or preferably, a canister filter with an integrated heater should be used, ensuring the heating element is not placed within the tank itself. Regular partial water changes should be performed to maintain low nitrate levels. This species is exceptionally aggressive and is best kept either alone or as a well-established male-female pair. They are intolerant of their own species, but may occasionally coexist with other robust cichlids, provided the aquarium is particularly large (over 1000 liters) and features numerous visual barriers. Suitable tankmates could include other Central or South American cichlids of comparable size and temperament, or large armored catfish. However, if breeding occurs, anticipate significant aggression directed towards other fish and be prepared to relocate the tankmates to a separate aquarium for their safety. At times, the male can be quite insistent when seeking to breed, and if the female is unresponsive, he may inflict harm upon her. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor their interactions closely and have a tank divider readily available, should the need arise.
