Golden Apple Snail 2-3CM

Apple snails, named for their size and shape, inhabit swampy habitats and possess several adaptations to survive periods of drought, including an operculum that seals moisture in their shell during dry spells. As air-breathing snails, they may leave the water occasionally, so it’s important to have a secure cover in place to prevent them from falling out of the aquarium. Having been introduced to areas beyond their natural range, they have become a significant agricultural pest, particularly destructive to rice and taro crops. This resulted in an EU-wide ban on their sale, which has been lifted in the UK (excluding NI) due to the unsuitability of the climate for these tropical animals. As aquarium pets, these snails are not ideal for tanks where aquatic plants are a priority, as they tend to prefer consuming dead or dying plant matter and fish food. While there are variations between species, most apple snails graze on algae growth but generally do not have a substantial impact on the cleanliness of the aquarium in this regard. Compatibility issues with these snails typically arise from other tank inhabitants, so it’s important not to introduce them to communities housing snail-eating loaches, pufferfish, or cichlids. Some fish may investigate the snails as they move around the aquarium, but it’s crucial to monitor for any undue harassment that might prevent the snails from feeding or accessing air at the water’s surface.
