The Giant Danio thrives in cool, fast-flowing mountain streams filled with boulders and lush vegetation. These fish prefer to swim in well-oxygenated waters in large groups, primarily feeding on insects that fall from above. Ideal for spacious sub-tropical aquariums with good water movement and high oxygen levels, Giant Danios are generally peaceful but can be quite lively during feeding times, making them unsuitable tankmates for slow or timid species. It’s best to keep them in groups of at least six, with ten or more being preferable if space permits. The aquarium should include smooth rocks and driftwood, along with hardy plants like Java Fern and Anubias that can withstand some current. A clear swimming area at the front of the tank is essential for their activity. Since they are accustomed to clean, flowing waters, regular partial water changes are crucial to prevent the accumulation of waste. Suitable tank companions include various subtropical loaches, catfish, and other compatible species. Ensure the tank has secure covers to prevent these agile jumpers from escaping.
