Geophagus Sveni
Named in tribute to Sven Kullander, this beautiful cichlid hails from the central regions of the Rio Tocantins drainage. Like many eartheaters, its natural habitat features vast areas of sand interspersed with rocks, leaf litter, and submerged tree roots. The aquarium should be well-established and roomy, with a broad area of soft sand substrate, as these fish enjoy sifting through it in their constant quest for food. Ensure there are ample hiding spots among driftwood tangles, rocky caves, and sturdy plants grown on the wood (such as Anubias sp. or Java Fern). It’s advisable to avoid planting vegetation directly in the substrate, as it is likely to be uprooted. Filtration must be effective, providing zones of moderate water flow along with some calmer areas for resting away from the current. Regular partial water changes are essential to keep nitrate levels low, which is particularly crucial since this species is sensitive to poor water quality. Unless they are breeding, eartheaters are typically peaceful and are found in loose groups in the wild. In an aquarium setting, it is best to keep this species in groups of six or more to establish a natural hierarchy. This arrangement not only fulfills their social requirements but also helps distribute any minor aggression within the group, preventing any single fish from facing the brunt of occasional aggressive behavior. Suitable tankmates include deep-bodied tetras, Angelfish, and other species that are too large to be eaten whole, as these cichlids are generally peaceful, while aggressive companions should be avoided. Although they are calm, they can pose challenges when kept with catfish, as they may outcompete slower-feeding bottom dwellers.
