The Checkerboard Cichlid is a captivating freshwater fish known for its unique checkerboard pattern and long fin filaments. Despite its small size, this fish has a serene demeanor and a striking appearance, making it highly sought after for both planted and biotope aquariums. Originally from the slow-moving, acidic waters of the Amazon Basin in South America, this species thrives in environments that replicate its natural habitat. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water with a rich tannin content and plenty of hiding spots. When it comes to feeding, the Checkerboard Cichlid is omnivorous and enjoys a diverse diet. To ensure optimal health and vibrant coloration, offer a combination of high-quality dried foods like flakes and pellets designed for small cichlids, as well as live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Due to their peaceful nature, Checkerboard Cichlids get along well with other non-aggressive species. Small tetras, dwarf corydoras, and similarly sized peaceful fish make ideal tank mates. It’s best to avoid housing them with larger or overly aggressive species to prevent stress.
