The Angelfish is a stunning focal point for any aquarium! The Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) has been a beloved choice among aquarists for many years. This sociable cichlid is generally more peaceful than many of its relatives. With its unique slender and tall body, it stands out from typical cichlids. Native to various river systems in Northern South America, most Angelfish in the aquarium trade are now bred in captivity, leading to a wide range of beautiful color variations. To thrive, Angelfish prefer a well-planted aquarium featuring driftwood and rock formations, along with gentle water movement. While they are not overly shy, they do enjoy the shelter provided by plants and, due to their shape, are less likely to hide in rocky caves. Generally, they get along well with other peaceful fish, provided there is ample space. They can become territorial, especially during breeding. It’s best to avoid keeping them with small, delicate invertebrates like dwarf shrimp, although larger, hardier shrimp and snails might coexist well in a sufficiently large tank. If you aim to breed them, it’s advisable to limit the presence of other species unless the aquarium is quite spacious. Feeding the Angelfish is straightforward, as they are not picky eaters. They will happily accept high-quality dry, frozen, and live foods. Ensuring a varied and nutritious diet is essential for maintaining their health and vibrant colors.
