The Featherfin Catfish thrives in a diverse range of environments across the Chad, Cross, Kwa Ibo, Niger, Volta, and White Nile river basins. This stunning bottom-dweller showcases a captivating color pattern that evolves as it grows, with intricate reticulated markings gradually transforming into simpler spots. As the fish matures, it develops a prominent dorsal fin, with the initial fin rays becoming elongated and feathery, creating a fan-like appearance when fully spread. For optimal care, the aquarium should be spacious—at least 4 feet long for young fish—and feature a soft sandy substrate to safeguard their long sensory barbels. It’s essential to include plenty of bogwood, rocky caves or PVC tubes, and sturdy plants to create shaded areas, while also leaving ample swimming space at the front of the tank. Using an external canister filter is advisable, as these fish are hearty eaters and can generate a significant amount of waste. The water should be well-oxygenated with a moderate flow, and regular partial water changes are crucial to keep nitrate levels low. These catfish prefer dim lighting, so utilizing blue-moon type illumination is a great way to observe their nighttime activities. You can keep multiple individuals together, provided there are plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers in the tank. They are often seen resting in the characteristic upside-down position beneath plants or decorations. Make sure to cover heaters with guards to protect these catfish from burns while they search for dark resting places. Suitable tankmates should be peaceful and larger than 5 cm (2 inches) to avoid predation; good companions include medium-sized tetras, barbs, gouramis, knifefish, larger loricariids, rainbowfish, or some robust West African cichlid species. However, it’s best to avoid keeping them with Malawi or Tanganyikan cichlids.
