This tranquil species is among the most appealing members of the Gourami family and is well-suited for community aquariums of adequate size. While they can adapt to various water conditions, they thrive best in softer, slightly acidic water. Pearl Gouramis enjoy having plenty of live plants in their aquarium, including floating varieties that help soften the lighting. Although they are much calmer than many of their relatives, it is advisable to keep these fish in groups with more females than males. When they are about half-grown, you can determine their sex by examining the dorsal fins; females have shorter, rounded fins, while males possess longer, more pointed ones. They may also be found marketed as Lace Gourami. The rarity of domesticated forms likely speaks to their inherent beauty.
