he aquarium needs to be spacious and have a soft sand bottom since these cichlids enjoy digging. Include hiding spots and visual barriers using driftwood and rocky caves, making sure the decorations are stable. You can grow strong plants like Anubias or Java Fern on driftwood to create more shaded areas. The filtration system should work well with moderate water flow, and regular small water changes will help keep nitrate levels low. You might be able to keep a Texas Cichlid with other large Central American cichlids of similar size and nature in a big tank with plenty of visual barriers, but usually, they thrive better alone. Other possible tankmates include large armored catfish or groups of larger barbs like Tinfoils. If you manage to get a compatible pair of H. carpintis, it’s best to keep them in a species-only tank, as they can become very aggressive towards other fish during breeding, which could lead to fatalities. Always have a strong tank divider ready in case they start fighting with each other.
