Description

SALVINI CICHLID 15-17CM

The Salvini Cichlid is found in the Rio Papaloapan in southeastern Mexico and extends into Guatemala and Belize. It prefers moderate to fast-flowing waters in the lower and middle parts of rivers. For a single pair, an aquarium should be at least 4 feet long, while a larger tank (6 feet or more) is needed for multiple fish or if kept with other species. The tank should have plenty of hiding spots created with driftwood and rocky caves, and large flower pots placed on their sides are also beneficial. If you want to include plants, choose hardy types like Java Fern (Microsorum sp.) or Anubias sp. attached to the wood, as plants planted in the substrate will likely be uprooted. Filtration must be strong, providing good oxygen levels and areas with fast water flow, along with some calmer spots for resting. Like other fish from flowing waters, Salvini Cichlids cannot handle high nitrate levels and need excellent water quality to thrive; regular partial water changes are crucial. These cichlids are known to be very aggressive, especially during breeding, and they become more territorial. It’s best to keep them as a pair. If you want tankmates, ensure the tank is large enough, as the Salvini Cichlids may become aggressive if they breed.
