Red Phantom Tetras thrive best in groups of 6 or more fish. It is recommended to have a well-planted aquarium with both rooted and floating plants to create shaded areas that they will enjoy. While occasional squabbles between males may occur, they are harmless and mainly for display. They are peaceful with other species, but tankmates should be chosen carefully as they require a specific sub-tropical temperature to thrive. Unlike the Black Phantom Tetra, the Red Phantom Tetra is not as hardy and should only be added to well-established tanks.
