Description
Striped Talking Catfish 12-15CM
The Striped Talking Catfish is a reclusive species typically found in slow-moving or still waters, where it hides beneath roots, rocks, and dense vegetation during daylight hours. It becomes active at night, foraging through the sediment for organic matter, insect larvae, and small benthic invertebrates. To create a suitable environment in an aquarium, it’s essential to use a soft sand substrate to protect its sensitive barbels and provide plenty of shaded hiding spots like slate caves, driftwood, and PVC pipes, as these fish prefer dim lighting. Incorporating robust plants, especially floating varieties, can help soften the light and offer additional cover. This species thrives in groups, so aim for at least five individuals of similar size. Installing a blue moonlight that activates before the main lights turn off can enhance your viewing experience of these nocturnal fish. Introducing some “dither fish,” such as medium-sized characins, barbs, rainbowfish, or peaceful cichlids, can encourage the catfish to be more active during the day, but ensure that tankmates are not too small to avoid becoming prey. Known for their ability to produce sounds through stridulation of their pectoral spines, Striped Talking Catfish require careful handling to prevent injury from their spines and body scutes, making it advisable to transfer them using a solid container instead of a net.
