Description
Panda Loach
in their natural habitat, these bottom-dwelling fish primarily consume small benthic invertebrates. In an aquarium setting, they will accept a variety of appropriately sized foods. It is advisable to provide a diverse diet that includes mini bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, and Daphnia, along with small sinking catfish pellets, crushed flakes, and powdered fry foods for particularly small specimens. Prior to introducing this species, ensure that the tank is well-established. A river-style aquarium setup is crucial, featuring adequate filtration and water movement, as well as a high level of oxygenation. The substrate should consist of sand or very fine smooth gravel, complemented by small, rounded cobbles and pebbles strategically placed in the water flow. While driftwood is not essential, it is important to avoid excessive amounts of bogwood, as this can alter the water chemistry, making it too soft and acidic for these loaches. Although robust, broad-leaved plants are not mandatory, they enhance the visual appeal of the tank and provide additional resting spots for P. pachychilus, which enjoy gently exploring the leaves, appearing to ‘surf’ in the current. Lighting can be relatively bright to promote natural algae growth and to mimic the shallow stream conditions they encounter in the wild. During particularly hot summer months, it may be necessary to implement a method to cool the water to a subtropical temperature.
