Description
Jaguar Cichlid 10-12CM
The Managuense Cichlid, commonly referred to as the Aztec Cichlid or the Jaguar Cichlid, is a strikingly patterned species of cichlid. Juvenile Managuense Cichlids exhibit a muted silver or gold hue adorned with spots along their bodies. As they grow, this muted appearance intensifies, and upon reaching sexual maturity, the previously dull blotches darken, ultimately becoming black with an irregular pattern reminiscent of the jaguar. The base coloration is pearlescent with a subtle purple tint. The spotting is generally less pronounced in females. Notably, the lower lip often protrudes over the upper lip, occasionally exposing some of the front teeth. For juvenile specimens, a minimum aquarium size of 50 gallons is recommended. Adults necessitate a tank of at least 70 gallons. It is essential to provide ample open swimming space along with hiding spots. The substrate should consist of coarse gravel, as the Managuense Cichlid is known to burrow and will disrupt any planted vegetation. Despite being a predatory species, the Managuense Cichlid can coexist with other large cichlids; however, it may exhibit aggression towards cichlids of similar coloration. Additionally, any fish small enough to fit into its mouth should not be housed in the same aquarium.
