Description
Geophagus Threespot 7-8CM
The Threespot Eartheater is found in the blackwaters of the upper Rio Negro in Brazil, as well as in the Orinoco River system spanning Colombia and Venezuela. In these regions, the water is notably soft and acidic, taking on a tea-like hue due to tannins released from decomposing organic matter. To create a suitable environment, the aquarium should be biologically mature and spacious, featuring a large area of soft sand substrate, as these fish enjoy sifting through it in search of food. It’s important to include plenty of hiding spots created by tangles of driftwood and sturdy plants like Anubias sp. or Java Fern that can thrive on the wood. However, vegetation planted directly into the substrate is likely to be uprooted, so it’s advisable to avoid that. Filtration should be effective, but the water movement should remain gentle, and adding aquarium peat to the filter will help mimic the natural blackwater conditions. Regular partial water changes are essential to keep nitrate levels low, which is crucial since this species is particularly sensitive to poor water quality. Generally peaceful unless breeding, the Threespot Eartheater is typically found in loose groups in the wild. In an aquarium setting, it’s best to keep them in groups of eight or more to establish a natural hierarchy. This arrangement not only satisfies their social needs but also helps distribute any minor aggression within the group, preventing any single fish from facing the brunt of occasional aggressive behavior. Ideal tankmates should be of similar size and temperament, occupy the upper water column, and thrive in the same soft, acidic environment. This species is recommended for experienced aquarists only.
