Description
Bleeding heart tetras, named after their vibrant red humeral spot, are native to habitats like slow-moving creeks, pools, and seasonal lakes. These environments are typically acidic and rich in tanins, giving the water a tea-like appearance. To create a suitable home for them in an aquarium, it is important to provide plenty of bogwood and dense planting to mimic their natural habitat. Unlike other tetras, they prefer the lower levels of the tank and tend to stay a bit apart from each other above the substrate. These social fish thrive in large groups, although males may display some competitive behavior. They can coexist peacefully with larger, calm species like Eartheaters and Angelfish, as well as other community fish that are too big to be eaten. However, it is not recommended to keep them with fancy, long-finned species such as guppies, as their slow movements and elaborate fins may be too tempting for the tetras.
