Gouramis belong to the families Osphronemidae, Helostomatidae, and Anabantidae, comprising a diverse group of fish. One notable characteristic of gouramis is their possession of a labyrinth organ, which functions similarly to a lung, enabling them to extract oxygen from the air at the water’s surface. This adaptation allows them to thrive in shallow, stagnant, and oxygen-deprived environments found in nature. Additionally, certain gouramis exhibit unique reproductive behaviors such as mouthbrooding or constructing bubble nests at the water’s surface to safeguard their eggs until they hatch. In terms of physical appearance, males typically exhibit larger sizes, more vibrant colors, and longer fins compared to females. Furthermore, various gourami species have been selectively bred to showcase a wide range of colors and more elaborate fins, resulting in visually striking variations.
