Gouramis

Gouramis belong to the families Osphronemidae, Helostomatidae, and Anabantidae. They possess a unique organ called the labyrinth, which functions similarly to a lung, allowing them to breathe air from the water’s surface. This adaptation enables them to thrive in shallow, stagnant, and oxygen-deprived environments found in nature. Certain gouramis are mouthbrooders, while others construct bubble nests on the water’s surface to protect and nurture their eggs until they hatch. Typically, males are larger in size and exhibit more vibrant colors and longer fins compared to females. Over time, various species of gouramis have been selectively bred to showcase different colors and more elaborate fins.
