Description
Crying Whiptail 7-8CM
Lamontichthys llanero was initially described by Taphorn and Lilyestrom in 1984. This species is part of the Loricariidae family, commonly known as armored catfish. The genus Lamontichthys includes six recognized species. The name Lamontichthys honors Francesca La Monte, a prominent ichthyologist, while the species name llanero pays tribute to the Llanero people residing in the plains (Los Llanos) near the Andes Mountains, specifically in the Apure River basin, where this fish is found. In terms of appearance, Lamontichthys llanero features a long, slender body and a flattened head. Its coloration ranges from gray to yellowish, adorned with dark transverse bands along its sides. The fins are brown with banding, and this fish can grow to a maximum standard length of approximately 20 centimeters, measured up to the caudal peduncle, excluding the tail and filaments. Members of the Lamontichthys genus, including Lamontichthys llanero, are characterized by elongated filaments at the tips of their pectoral and caudal fins, which can exceed the fish’s total length.
