Description
Freshwater Moray Eel 20-25CM
In the wild, this moray eel can be spotted further inland, away from tidal zones and seawater than its relatives. When it’s in freshwater, it usually hangs out in hard, alkaline environments and can thrive there for years. Adults are believed to migrate to the ocean to spawn. This big bottom-dweller needs a roomy aquarium with a soft sand base where it can search for food and relax. It’s important to have plenty of hiding spots like rocky caves, PVC tubes, and sturdy plants like Java fern or Anubias. Good filtration is a must, with some areas having moderate water flow and quieter spots for resting. Regular partial water changes are crucial to keep nitrate levels low. A high KH is key for its health, and it can also thrive in brackish or marine setups. Adding saltwater can be beneficial for long-term health, especially for females that seem to be carrying eggs. Moray eels are quite predatory, but they can live in groups in larger tanks and usually get along with other peaceful fish that are too big to eat. Even though their eyesight isn’t great, they have an excellent sense of smell and can pick up on vibrations, allowing them to quickly strike at potential prey. This includes hands, so be careful during tank maintenance—they can bite! To avoid them associating fingers with food, it’s best not to hand-feed morays. Make sure the tank has tight-fitting lids since these fish are known escape artists. You might also hear them referred to as Tiger or Snowflake freshwater morays.
