Description
Orange-Banded Hillstream Catfish (akysis vespa) 4-5CM
Akysis, commonly known as “wasp catfish,” derives its name from the well-known species Akysis vespa, which is notorious for its painful sting caused by its venomous pectoral fin spines. While this species is the most recognized, there are 24 other scientifically described species that can also deliver a nasty sting, so it’s important to handle them with care. However, these small catfish are not aggressive and do not attack unless provoked. One of the longest-known species in this genus is Akysis prashadi, which can grow up to 6-7 cm and was first described scientifically in 1936. This species is endemic to Burma, specifically found in the tributaries of Lake Indawgyi. They are easy to care for and will accept a variety of common fish foods. Akysis prashadi enjoy burrowing in fine sand when available and are egg layers that do not exhibit brood care. Given their natural habitat, they thrive at room temperature, ideally not exceeding 25°C.
