Hoplo Catfish make fantastic bottom-dwellers for larger aquariums with medium-sized companions. Due to their significant size, they should not be housed with small fish like Neon Tetras, as these could be eaten when the Hoplo is most active at night. It’s best to keep them in groups of five or more, reflecting their naturally sociable behavior in the wild where they often gather in large numbers. Careful monitoring is essential, especially during pairing and spawning, as males can become aggressive, necessitating the relocation of some fish. While juveniles can thrive in a 4-foot tank, adults need more space. A soft sand substrate is ideal for protecting their sensitive barbels, and ample hiding spots created with bogwood, rocks, and sturdy plants are important. Since Hoplo Catfish enjoy digging, ensure that all decorations are securely placed. Lighting should be subdued, possibly using floating plants to diffuse brightness, and a blue moonlight tube is recommended for observing these nocturnal fish in the evening. Although they can tolerate less-than-ideal conditions in the wild, maintaining a proper care routine and regular water changes is crucial for their health in captivity.
