This peculiar creature is best suited to coexist with sturdy fish in a securely covered fish tank. It is typically found in freshwater environments and can adapt well to both hard, alkaline water and brackish conditions. In its natural habitat, this eel can be found further inland, away from the influence of tides and the influx of seawater, unlike its relatives. When residing in freshwater, these habitats are usually characterized by hard and alkaline water, and this eel can thrive in such conditions for extended periods, with adult eels believed to migrate to the sea for breeding. To accommodate this sizable bottom-dweller, a spacious aquarium with a soft sand substrate is necessary, allowing it to search for food and indulge in its wallowing behavior. It is important to provide numerous hiding spots, such as rocky caves, PVC tubes, and resilient plants like Java fern or Anubias. The filtration system should be efficient, maintaining areas of moderate water movement, while also offering quieter resting areas away from strong currents.
