A large yet tranquil species that is ideal for bigger aquariums. Juveniles grow rapidly, so it’s important to provide plenty of space from the beginning. Tinfoil Barbs are social fish and should be kept in groups of six or more. Given their size and feeding behavior, it’s essential to have a good amount of external filtration and to perform regular partial water changes. The aquarium needs to be well-oxygenated. Tinfoil Barbs enjoy a significant amount of greens in their diet, which means they may see aquatic plants as food—many aquarists opt to design their tanks without live plants or use plastic alternatives instead. These fish are not aggressive and coexist well with other medium to large fish that have a similar temperament. However, due to their size, it’s important to select tankmates carefully, as larger Tinfoil Barbs can easily consume smaller fish. Additionally, the aquarium should be securely covered with a strong hood or coverslides, as these fish are known to jump, and an adult can be quite hefty.
