The Flagtail Prochilodus is found in a wide area in the central and western parts of the Amazon river and its tributaries. This eye-catching fish can grow quite large and needs a spacious aquarium. It can live with other medium-sized fish, but it may be aggressive towards its own kind, so it’s best to keep them in a group of 6 or more. The Flagtail Prochilodus is a bit sensitive, so it’s important to have a mature aquarium and do regular partial water changes. They like a sandy substrate, river rocks, and driftwood to hide in. They tend to eat most plants, but some aquarists have had success with Java fern or tough-leaved plants. They can also be kept with plastic or silk plants. Bright lighting is not a problem, as they will eat most types of algae. Another similar species, S. taeniurus, is also sold as the Flagtail Prochilodus. Both species have small dark spots when they are young, but these fade as S. insignis gets older. These fish are good jumpers, so a tight-fitting cover is necessary.
