The Wrestling Halfbeak is a slender surface-dwelling fish typically found in environments such as canals, drains, flooded fields, lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams characterized by slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters. During the rainy season, larvae and young fry may inhabit the brackish waters of the upper sections of mangrove swamps. When setting up an aquarium for this species, it is essential to place it in a calm location and maximize the surface area, as these fish can be quite skittish. Providing ample space is crucial to prevent damage to their long, delicate mouthparts if they dart quickly against the aquarium glass. Incorporating tall driftwood structures and dense vegetation, including floating plants for surface cover, will enhance their sense of security. Filtration should be effective yet gentle, and performing small partial water changes will help maintain low nitrate levels. Wrestling Halfbeaks thrive best in groups, ideally consisting of one male with several females, or in larger tanks with sufficient visual barriers, at least six males to distribute any territorial disputes. They are generally peaceful with other species, and suitable tankmates should be of comparable size and temperament. Compatible companions may include other livebearers, resilient Corydoras species, Kribensis, rainbowfish, and clown plecos. It is advisable to avoid housing them with very small fish or fry, as they may be preyed upon, and to steer clear of aggressive species that could intimidate the halfbeaks. Additionally, ensure that the aquarium has securely fitting covers, as these fish are known for their jumping abilities.
