ROYAL WHIPTAIL 7-8CM

The Royal Farlowella (Sturisoma panamense), often called the Twig or Whiptail Catfish, belongs to the Loricariidae family of South American suckermouth catfishes. While many species in this group are not commonly bred in aquariums, some farms have successfully bred the Royal Farlowella. This fish is distinctive due to its slender, twig-like shape and the long extensions on its tail. The Royal Farlowella is mostly active at night but can also be seen during the day once it feels comfortable in an aquarium filled with driftwood, rocks, and hiding spots. Unlike some suckermouth catfish, it does not heavily consume wood but may benefit from the biofilm found on driftwood. This fish generally does not harm plants and will eat a lot of algae, especially when young. A suitable diet includes high-quality vegetable flakes, sinking algae wafers, and pellets, along with fresh vegetables like peas, spinach, zucchini, and cucumber. Occasionally, small amounts of meaty foods like bloodworms can be given, but too much can be harmful and increase waste in the tank. The Royal Farlowella is very peaceful and gets along well with most non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. Larger individuals might eat tiny dwarf shrimp or their fry, but many aquarists successfully keep them with shrimp. This fish can grow up to 8 inches long, but its thin body means it produces less waste compared to bulkier fish of the same length.
